The only visible bit of a mortice lock is on a doors edge, where the catch emerges. It doesn’t lock automatically like a “Yale”, you need to turn the key, so it normally only gets used when you are going out for a reasonable period, or at night.

Usually front door mortice locks have no handles so only operate with the key. Back door mortices, which are combined with catches, which will keep a door closed (but not locked), do usually have handles and of course a key.

Any lock is only as good as the frame it “catches” on. Wooden door frames, are thin affairs and splinter easily. There is an argument for actually fitting a useless lock. It will still keep out the honest Joe but villains who are determined to get in, will get in but actually do far less damage as they apply their size 10 bootage.

The average Yale type lock can be “kicked in” quite easily (or so “fingers” told me in the pub last week). If you want to keep the bad lads out long enough for the noise of them breaking the door down to actually attract a neighbour’s attention, then fit a mortice lock because its fitted (morticed) into the door and more importantly, into the frame.

Better quality mortice locks come with their striking plate, (the section fitted into the frame), elongated, so that it covers more of the frame’s area, has more screws holding it and will require almost total annihilation of that side of the frame before a persistent door kicker gets in.

At night when you lock it, leave the key in it, you will never find the key and get out of the house, in the event of a fire.
