“Labour” at £175 a day (tradesman) £100 (labourer), includes incidental fixings etc. and tipping charges. “Materials” if mentioned, are larger things (a boiler) and stuff only you can choose (tiles etc). Also VAT must be added all round.

So what design do you want? I’ll tell you, shall I?

Cupboards underneath, (for the video, digisbatch, pudgybox, podocam, etc). Wide shelf above these for the telly, I know it’s a 65” flat screen but the base is still as big as a dustbin lid isn’t it. Then the shelves, with a big space above the bottom one for those interchangeable Sunday Times Atlases and ludicrous great books on Matisse and those oh so necessary tomes on whatsisnames patchy old garden “Giverney”. Why do we bother? Who are we trying to kid? Every self-portrait these blokes ever did only made them look like that old yellow faced drunk in that bar in the “Simpsons”.

Four shelves above that, for all those books with shiny embossed covers you actually bothered to bring back from your holidays! Then possibly a nice tasteful arch at the top.

Do you want a matching skirting to go across the bottom?

Do you want the shelves to be encased (framed) on each side, or just hanging on tiny little pegs in the wall?

If there is a large span, are you happy for him to support the back of each shelf with planed timber battens?

Do you want mouldings anywhere? Pinned to the front edges of the shelves for instance or mirroring the cupboard door edges?

What sort of handles do you want? You can choose these yourself from “Beeskneesbase”. I bet you can’t guess what rubbishy metal they’re made from.

Who will paint it all when it’s done?

The only decision you won’t have to make, is what the whole thing is made from…..MDF!

    Open or Close

    The fixings on the letterbox are ALWAYS too close to the letterbox hole. It's a design error that has never been addressed. The chippie won't want to paint the door. So you are going to have to paint it early one morning and keep it open for eight hours plus! Get that crossword out.
