1To replace with a similar unit, which requires no supply cable upgrade. This will require a plumber and an electrician. Plumbers play the “Manuel” card when it comes to electrics (work it out). Also, it’s illegal for anyone who is not affiliated to a “competence scheme” to undertake electrical work in a bathroom. So, one to do the wet work, one to do the “sparky” bit. Hopefully they won’t both charge more than half a day.

Information Sheet on Fitting an Electric/Power Shower

This article only relates to electric shower replacement, when the existing one is kaput! We also have different “costed” articles relevant to all the other aspects of showers (bases, cubicles, pumps, entire enclosures etc).

So, if you were happy with your existing electric shower, simply get a replacement. If you think a bit better flow rate for a particular heat setting would be nice, now’s the time to upgrade. They come with roughly 8.5, 9.5 and 10.8 kW (power) outputs and have corresponding prices.

Better ones incorporate thermostatic control which means the shower water temperature stays the same if someone turns a cold tap on elsewhere in the house: it’s an anti-scald device.

If you do upgrade to a higher heat output, it will probably be necessary to upgrade the electrical supply cable and possibly the fuse, as well.
You may however be replacing a
pumped electric showerNormal electric showers don’t require stored water, they take mains pressure cold water, heat it in the shower unit and deliver it to the shower head.

A pumped electric shower take
stored cold water (from the loft tank or its own separate tank) heats it just like a normal electric shower and then pumps it to the shower head. These are more expensive …about £330.
