Plastering Tips and Tricks

The Building Sheriff Plasters!

Plastering is one of those building activities that gets more complementary remarks from customers than anything else we builders do (apart from knocking £100 off the invoice because she’s a nice little old lady)!

As I mention in the video, it just seems like magic – taking a bucket of slop and transforming it into a salmon-pink glass-like sheet on their wall – seem to be the stuff of miracles.

Truth be told, however, if you have very little plastering experience, this end result might seem light years away. There is one simple adage that goes a long way in building and DIY and that is: “Know your material”. This goes for paint, mortar, wallpaper, filler – the lot. How long does it take to go off? How much can I work it? What consistency is best? Can I add water to revive it? Will it split if I screw this way, but not that?

Plastering is a great case in point. The job needs to be done in stages and, to do it properly. It’s a Kenny Rogers – you need to know when to trowl it, and know when to leave it – “You’ve gotta know when to hold ‘em…”

So sit back, have a cuppa and watch the process!

If you’re going to have a go yourself for the first time, make sure the wife is out and be sure you have a “rug doctor” franchise nearby!

Good luck
